Necroptosis is a form of regulated cell death that mimicks features of apoptosis and necrosis. It requires the receptor-interacting serine/threonine-protein kinase 3 (RIPK3) protein and its substrate the mixed lineage kinase domain-like (MLKL) protein to function properly. Necroptosis has been shown to play a role in the pathophysiology of some cancers, atherosclerosis, pancreatitis, and inflammatory bowel diseases.
