Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by synaptic loss, accumulation of amyloid B plaques and neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs). The AD pathways consist of the amyloid B cleavage and degradation pathways, APOE-cholesterol pathway, and the NFT accumulation pathway. Although a large part of the biological components of AD are not characterized, there is a strong genetic correlation AD and these three genes: amyloid precursor protein (APP), presenilin 1 (PSSEN1), and presenilin 2 (PSEN2).
