Glutamine is considered fuel for immune cells and plays a crucial role in healthy immune cell function. Glutamine metabolism involves several enzymes including glutamine synthetase (GS) and phosphate-dependent glutaminase (GLS). GS is involved in the reaction that makes glutamine from ammonium ion. It is also involved in the synthesis of glutamate via ATP consumption, while GLS is responsible for glutamine hydrolysis.
