The G2 phases of the cell cycle interphase precedes mitosis. During this phase the cell undergoes rapid cell growth and protein synthesis. G2 is followed by the M phase (aka mitosis), which is when DNA condenses into chromosomes and the cell physically divides in to two daughter cells.
